This sounds like a really good game.

How much were speed and athleticism a factor? I take your point that more complex terrain increases the value of strategy, but it also increases the chance of injury. I am tempted to organize a game in my neighborhood. The two locations are diametrically opposite types of terrain: flat open grass field or a hilly semi-dense wood.

I think general athleticism definitely mattered. Honestly in the games we played, aim mattered a lot because the dodgeballs were a bit op. If you could throw and catch, it was often easier to get a few folks out and then grab the flag. Speed basically didn't matter except for dodging; most of the time the flag was an easy pick up because the rest of the opposing team was literally wiped out.

We played in a pretty small field, at most 300 steps from one respawn area to the other. I think that was actually a good choice for us, since any win or loss was pretty quick and we could reset fast.

Re injury, we definitely had one or two folks fall by tripping on a root; I almost bonked my head on the picnic table that I mentioned when I was running backwards trying to catch a dodgeball. YMMV, I think it comes with the terrain (pun intended)
